Tribeca fest cues up 'Dynasty'

Film centers on journo uncovering Roc-a-Fella secrets

Hip-hopper Damon Dash's insider urban music world comedy "Death of a Dynasty," starring Jay-Z, will world premiere May 7 in a gala event at the second Tribeca Film Festival.

Set and shot in New York, the film centers around a hip-hop magazine journalist on assignment to uncover the inner workings of Dash and Jay-Z's music stable Roc-a-Fella Records. Granted unlimited access, the reporter double-deals the team by feeding damaging gossip to columnists.

Rashida Jones ("Boston Public"), Devon Aoki and Ebon Moss-Bachrach also star, with cameos by Chloe Sevigny, Jamie Lynn-Sigler, Lorraine Bracco, Carson Daly, Walt Frazier, Ed Lover, Dr. Dre, Flavor Flav, Peter Sarsgaard, Daryl McDaniels of Run DMC and the late rapper Jam Master Jay.

Indie stalwart

Producer Steven C. Beer and his partners at Rudolph & Beer Film & Music have been involved as producers reps on such Sundance titles as "Tumbleweeds," "L.I.E.," "Paradox Lake" and "State of Denial."

Described by Beer as an urban comedy with the humor of 'Barbershop' and- the street sensibility of "Empire," "Dynasty" is Dash's first theatrical feature as director after helming Universal homevid release "Paper Soldiers." Dash is CEO of the Roc-a-Fella factory, which includes music, film and fashion divisions.

Choice pick

"'Death of a Dynasty' is a terrific film for the Tribeca Film Festival because it represents the mission of the festival to include a diverse array of films, from the classics to the latest streetwise urban films," said fest co-founder Jane Rosenthal.

The Lower Manhattan event will run May 3-11.
