Mike Harris

Journalist, film and TV critic and former Variety staffer and contributor Mike Harris died Aug. 7 of liver cancer in Sydney. He was 64.

Variety's first full-time staffer in Australia, Harris was recruited in 1975 to launch the newspaper's Sydney bureau. He served as bureau chief until 1981, when he joined the Australian Film Commission as its L.A.-based marketing manager for North and South America.

Returning to Australia in 1985, he turned to critiquing television, initially as a reviewer for Kerry Packer's Bulletin magazine, then for Rupert Murdoch's Australian newspaper, as well as contributing stories to Variety.

Born in Maidenhead outside London, Harris worked early in his career for the Illustrated London News, Time and Tide and the Financial Times. He moved to Australia in 1968 after meeting his wife, Carolyn, in London.

In addition to Carolyn, he is survived by their son, David, as well as Joel, a son from his first marriage.
