Hugh Edward Conlon Jr.

Hugh Edward Conlon Jr., a longtime employee of 20th Century Fox who headed the studio's fire department, died Jan. 7 of Parkinson's disease in Yucca Valley. He was 80.

Conlon actually grew up on the Fox lot when it was still called the William Fox Studios. His father, Hugh Edward Conlon Sr., served as the fire chief, and the entire family lived on the lot in the original firehouse, long ago torn down but part of what is now Century City.

Following World War II service, the junior Conlon joined Fox in 1947 as a studio lot fireman and during the 1960s was appointed by Richard Zanuck as chief of fire, police and plant protection. He retired in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Elda, a daughter; two sons and five grandchildren.
