HOLLYWOOD -- The "8 Mile" DVD racked up sales of nearly $40 million Tuesday, its first day in stores, according to estimates by Universal Studios Home Video.

That's great news for U, since the studio was expecting the DVD to sell a disproportionate number of copies to rabid fans in the first weekend, following the pattern of the movie, which did almost half of its overall $117 million box office business in the first weekend. The opening weekend for the DVD could be seriously affected by war in Iraq.

U also released the DVD-premiere urban movie "Paper Soldiers" on Tuesday and said the first movie from Arenas Entertainment in partnership with Universal Pictures, "Empire" starring John Leguizamo, nearly sold out in most stores on the same opening day.
