BV Music's Cavallo stays at Disney

Renewal not long term for group's founder

Buena Vista Music Group topper Bob Cavallo has reupped his employment contract with the music division's corporate parent, Walt Disney, a source inside the media giant confirmed Wednesday at its annual shareholders' confab in Denver.

However, the Disney insider said the renewal wasn't a long-term deal -- implying that Cavallo could be up for renegotiation once again in as little as a year.

Exec founded Buena Vista -- currently home to Hollywood Records, Walt Disney Records, Lyric Street, Mammoth and Walt Disney Music Publishing -- in 1998 to consolidate the conglom's various music-related properties into one entity.

Separately, Walt Disney topper Michael Eisner reiterated his company's intention to "aggressively stay away" from signing gangsta-rap artists, noting that they're not a good "cultural fit" with Disney's family-oriented properties.

Buena Vista had weathered some criticism in 1999 when Hollywood Records released the soundtrack to Fox comedy "the PJs," which included tracks from such hard-edged rap acts as Snoop Dogg and members of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
