'Daughters' to stay in Nine's corral

Show is Oz's second-highest rated domestic drama

SYDNEY -- Kerry Packer's Nine Network has surprised no one by re-inking Millennium Pictures' hit cattle station drama "McLeod's Daughters" for a fourth series.

Deal is the first substantial contract inked by drama topper Posie Graeme-Evans since her appointment in December. The dynamic former indie producer created the series and retains an executive producer credit.

"McLeod's" is now Australia's second-highest rating domestic drama after 1.4 million viewers tuned into the mid-week 7:30 p.m. show.

As with previous series, series four will be funded by a public share offering from Nine and the Macquarie Bank, due to be launched next week.

Internationally "McLeod's" has been a leading property for Southern Star Sales. The previous series sold extensively, including to Hallmark Channel for all its territories worldwide.

Southern Star Sales CEO Catherine Payne said the show has been a hit with international broadcasters because it plays very broadly and most "think outback Australia is really desolate and so are surprised to see rich scenery in McLeod's." She said negotiations for the sale of series four are underway but have not been confirmed.
