Disney signs TPS pic pact

'Signs,' '25th Hour' among titles in deal

The Mouse House has signed a multiyear pay TV deal with French satcaster TPS, giving the paybox a victory over bigger rival Canal Plus.

Monday's deal, TPS' second pact with a Hollywood major in just over a week, is for current and future live action releases from Touchstone plus European pics.

"Signs," "25th Hour," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "The Last Kiss" will be screened on TPS Star, the channel TPS launched last year to rival Canal Plus' premium channel.

The deal also includes second window rights, after Disney Channel, for Walt Disney Pictures live action features according to Tom Toumazis, senior VP and managing director Buena Vista Intl. TV, and Emmanuel Florent, TPS prexy and general manager.

TPS inked a multiyear pay TV and pay-per-view deal with Warner Bros., which previously had an output deal with Canal Plus. TPS now has first or second window deals with six out of seven Hollywood majors.

"This new agreement is an important building block in our programming acquisition strategy. Everybody is acquainted with the quality of production of a studio like Disney," Florent said.
