Morricone to score 'Sportsman'

Pole-sitting pic will be filmed in Frisian language

AMSTERDAM -- Italian composer Ennio Morricone will write the soundtrack for Dutch film "Sportsman of the Century," which begins shooting in August.

Produced by Staccato Films ("Pauline & Paulette"), the pic is a tragi-comedy about the ancient sport of pole sitting in Friesland, a province in Northern Holland. Pic will be filmed in Frisian, a language related to Old English and still spoken by a half a million people.

The 74-year-old Morricone has written the score for over 500 films, including "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Pic will be the debut of director Mischa Alexander, scripter for the two of the biggest Dutch box office hits of the last two years, "All Stars" and "Full Moon."

Director of photography is Rogier Stoffers ("John Q," "Character"). Dutch actor Johnny de Mol has signed on for the pic, which is still in casting.

Pic is about a farm hand who tries to win his love's heart by setting a pole-sitting record -- sitting on a pole in a canal or lake for as long as possible.
