Bay's firm to produce Indonesian horror pic
Radar Pictures to fund, arrange distrib'n for $10 mil 'Well'
Bay's Platinum Dunes will produce, along with Roy Lee and Doug Davison's Vertigo Entertainment. Platinum Dunes has a first-look deal with Radar Pictures, which will fund the $ 10 million pic and arrange worldwide distribution.
Purnomo conceived the story about Yank backpackers on holiday in Bali, but the project is out to U.S. writers to ensure it has the best shot at connecting with U.S. and international auds.
Urban horror hit
The duo's first effort, "Jelangkung" (Ouija Board) , an urban horror pic, was a surprise hit in Indonesia earlier this year, clocking more than one million admissions.
Lee contacted the helmers after reading about that film in Daily Variety, to express interest in a remake with Miramax abroad.
He met the directors when they visited L.A., where they signed with the William Morris Agency. WMA agents Todd Feldman, Jeff Gorin and Gregory Knightput them in touch with Bay, who sparked to "The Well's" concept.
Bay has agreed to supervise the production, which will be lensed in high def-digital.
"The Well" will be the first film made in Indonesia, directed by Indonesians, under a U.S. flag.
Lee says he's still interested in doing a remake of "Jelangkung," post-" The Well."
