Scorsese preps doc on British cinema

Miramax nabs North American rights

LONDON -- Martin Scorsese is planning a documentary about the history of British cinema, to follow his previous docs "My Voyage To Italy" and "A Personal Journey Through American Movies."

Miramax Films has picked up North American rights to the latest project, which is being produced by Carlton Intl. is association with Scorsese's Cappa Prods.

"A History of British Cinema" will reunite Scorsese with the production team behind "My Voyage To Italy," led by Michael Wilson.

Scorsese has always acknowledged his debt to certain British filmmakers, notably Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger, whose films, such as "The Red Shoes," he played a leading role in repopularizing. His editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, is Powell's widow.
