Backstory: Schoonmaker has worked with Scorsese for three decades and is nominated for an ACE Eddie this year for her work with him on "Gangs of New York."
"Marty is a sensitive human being," she says of bringing an element of diplomacy to the job of editor. "It's good to be able to understand an artist and know when they do, or don't, want you to ask them a question."
She adds, "A good director needs a lot of support to get their vision onto the screen. They need an editor to present them with options. Filmmaking is really about collaboration. It's said often, but it needs to be said more."
