MTV Europe eyes development

Bowes to o'see unit creating 3 formats, 20 pilots this year

LONDON -- MTV Networks announced Tuesday it is launching a program development unit March 10 to create original music franchises and concepts that will air on its 44 MTV, VH1 and TMF music channels.

The new unit will be part of MTV Productions Europe. Production teams from its 17 MTV Europe channels, as well as its U.S. and international groups will provide input.

Matthew Bowes, formerly head of production MTV U.K. & Ireland, will head the unit and has a remit to create three new formats and up to 20 pilots this year. Bowes will report to Richard Godfrey, senior veep, MTV Production Europe.

MTV said new unit demonstrates its commitment to creating original programming. Company confirmed it has increased its investment in programming by 19% year-on-year, but would not be more specific.
