Nicole Kidman waves bye-bye to tabloid rumors at the U.K. preem of 'The Hours.'

LONDON -- BVI elected for a restrained London preem for "The Hours" Monday that eschewed the glitz and glamour of recent West End bows for its Oscar rivals "Catch Me If You Can" and "Chicago."

Despite the low-key feel, pic's stars Nicole Kidman, Ed Harris, Miranda Richardson, helmer Steven Daldry and scribe David Hare were on hand at the Chelsea cinema to introduce the literary drama inspired by Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" the night before Oscar noms came out Stateside.

Notable guests at the after-party at the Bluebird restaurant included Harvey Weinstein, Gillian Anderson, Brenda Blethyn, Elton John, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Virgin supremo Richard Branson, Brit artist Sam Taylor-Wood and fashion designer Nicole Farhi.

Kidman, dressed in an elegant black dress with asymmetrical sleeves, refuted frenzied allegations that she had had an affair with Jude Law on the Romanian set of Anthony Minghella's "Cold Mountain." Kidman dismissed the rumors as "not true." Law later denied he was splitting from his wife, Sadie Frost, amid talk of divorce lawyers and further treatment for Frost's post-partum depression.

"The Hours" ended up nabbing nine Oscar noms -- which was nine more than Weinstein was prepared to forecast at the U.K. preem. When Daily Variety asked how he hoped pic would fare, Weinstein replied: "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I never predict things like that."
