To the Editor:
We've always respected your opinion over the years, Mr. Goldman, only to find out what a schmuck you really are! If you don't like Mr. Scorsese, then keep your mouth shut.
"Gangs" is a brilliantly flawed movie. I had no problem keeping up with its many sub-layers. If story was our only concern, we'd be reading novels. Movies are more than than just stories. And Marty has experimented with trying to break the formula for storytelling, sometimes to astonishing results.
movies may not always reach the heights of "Taxi Driver," but they are so much better than the output of most of the other American directors.
Just because the Oscar was never awarded to Kubrick or Hitchcock doesn't mean Scorsese shouldn't get one. And if it's really for his body of work, why the hell not?!
