After Sony managed to win Oscar eligibility for its live-action-toon hybrid 'Stuart Little 2,' Academy voters failed to give it a nod.
The Walt Disney Co. was crowing Tuesday that it earned a record 44 Oscar nominations -- well, give or take 40.
A press release touted the "industry-leading" 44, which counted all noms for Miramax films -- 31 for the company and another nine for "The Hours," which Miramax is sharing with Paramount -- along with Buena Vista's noms. Those total four.
Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group received noms in the animated feature category for "Lilo & Stitch," "Treasure Planet" and "Spirited Away." It also got a nom in the animated short race, for the Pixar-produced "Mike's New Car."
"Today's nominations are a tribute to the talented creators who have developed such compelling content to audiences worldwide during the past year for the Walt Disney Co.," Disney chairman-CEO Michael Eisner said in the release. "As evidenced by the nominations, this content has been delivered with the high quality for which Disney is known."
The release also offered "a complete list of nominations received by the Walt Disney Co."
While Eisner is quick to gloat about the happy relationship between Disney and Miramax, that hasn't always been the case.
Miramax rubbed its parent company the wrong way over possible releases like "Priest" and "Kids," not to mention "Dogma." A clash also occurred when Disney proposed production of a movie-for-TV that followed the same story as a Miramax feature.
At Oscar time, however, it's clearly one big happy family.
