Pointing out 'Net pirates

Site uncovers possible web design thiefs

Deja vu is disconcerting enough on its own -- it's even worse when your Web design appears in front of you for the second time presented as someone else's creation. Pirated Sites showcases sites and their doppelgangers, with over 100 solid examples of designs obviously cribbed.

Of course, there's a gray area between homage, inspiration, parody and piracy. Web users overall would benefit if more sites shared standard design conventions that we users rely on as we surf around from site to site.

Still, if you think your Web site is being copied too close for comfort, you can submit them for inclusion in this archive.

The site's optimistic founder hopes that by a site's designer being branded a pirate, he or she will be shamed into changing the offending site -- but there's no legal consequence to being listed here, just a karmic one.
