George Haimsohn, writer-artist who co-wrote the book and lyrics for perennial favorite "Dames at Sea," died Jan. 17 of a massive aneurysm in NYC. He was 77.
Off Broadway show debut in 1968 and launched Bernadette Peters. It has since become a college and community mainstay as well as receiving major regional productions.
St. Louis native and WWII Navy vet was a UC Berkeley grad and Greenwich Village resident since 1952, where he was a professional photographer known as Plato. He also wrote ads, poetry (including limericks) and gay fiction and was a collage artist.
He wrote two other musicals, "Now, Zing!" and "Johnny American," and he penned and illustrated three books for the college crowd: "The Portable Hamlet," "The Bedside Faust" and "Inside Romeo and Juliet."
He is survived by a sister.
