Sony Pix Classics in talks to distrib 'Masked'

Sony Pictures Classics is in negotiations for North American distribution rights to the Bob Dylan starrer "Masked & Anonymous," the first title from Nigel Sinclair and Guy East's Spitfire Pictures.

"Masked & Anonymous" will be a Centerpiece Premiere Jan. 22 at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, which opens Thursday and runs through Jan. 24.

Pic's ensemble cast includes Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Luke Wilson and Angela Bassett.

Dylan portrays an iconic cult singer who is released from prison to perform a benefit concert. Initial Entertainment Group handles foreign sales on the pic.

Written by Rene Fontaine and Sergy Petrov, the film is the feature directing debut of Larry Charles, producer of "Seinfeld" and "Mad About You."

Produced by Sinclair for Spitfire and Jeff Rosen for Grey Water Park Prods., the film is presented by Anatoly Fradis' Marching Band Prods. and David Thompson of BBC Films.

Fradis, Thompson, Spitfire co-founder Guy East, Joseph Cohen, Vladimir Dostal, Marie Cantin and Pietro Scalia are executive producers with Nikolai Makarov co-producing.

Dylan records for the Sony label. Pic reps his first feature role in 15 years; his last was in "Hearts of Fire."
