LONDON -- Stephen Carter, former NTL managing director is being tipped favorite for the post of chief executive of Ofcom, Britain's new super regulator for the media and telecoms industries.
Ofcom chairman Lord Currie is understood to be keen to hire an exec with a business and or economics background, and if possible experience in both media and telecoms. Prior to joining cable company NTL, Carter was U.K. chief executive of advertising agency J Walter Thompson.
Other candidates in the running include Patricia Hodgson, chief executive of TV watchdog the Independent Television Commission and Nick Lovegrove, the McKinsey consultant who advised John Birt when he was director general of the BBC.
Ofcom will carry out final interviews next week and is expected to announce the appointment of a chief exec at the end of the month.
