'Choice' biopic wraps
Canuck pic concerns controversial figure Morgentaler
The producers issued an announcement at the end of the monthlong shoot instead of the beginning because of fears that the set might be attacked by abortion opponents.
Some of Morgentaler's clinics have been bombed, and Morgentaler, nearly 80, is still a contentious figure in Canada.
"There was some concern, mostly from my partners outside of Quebec," said executive producer Kevin Tierney, referring to fellow producers Laszlo Barna and Carol Hay. "You start on the principle that any disruption to shooting would be problematic because of the margins you're working on."
And while there was no extra security on the set, "We weren't oblivious," Tierney added. "We didn't play fast and loose with security." Lensing went off without a hitch, however.
Directed by John L'Ecuyer, "Choice" stars David Eisner as Morgentaler, along with Stewart Bick, Alberta Watson, Julie Khaner, Remy Girard and Pascale Montpetit.
A spokesman for broadcaster CTV, which is airing the movie as part of its politically charged Signature Series, said the C$3.875 million ($2.5 million) movie doesn't take a stand on the issue. "It's not pro-choice or pro-life, it's a sweeping tale of a man and his life."
