Quartet reopens Doors

Re-formed band to perform Dec. 8 at Palms in Vegas

With the success of a reunion gig fresh in their memory, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of the Doors are teaming with singer Ian Astbury of the Cult and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland to record and perform next year as the Doors of the new millennium.

The re-formed band, which debuted Labor Day weekend at a Harley Davidson event in Fontana, will make its next performance Dec. 8 at the Palms in Las Vegas.

One of the great L.A. rock bands of the 1960s and early '70s, the quartet worked as a trio after the death of singer Jim Morrison in 1971, and fully disbanded in late 1972. The Doors did a segment for VH1's "Storytellers" in the fall of 2000 with drummer John Densmore, who is not joining the band due to a severe tinnitus condition.

"Thirty years after our last gig was long enough to wait," guitarist Krieger said.

Currently writing collectively and recording without a record deal secured, the Doors plan to play small venues across the U.S. in May and then play festival gigs in Europe in early summer. Band expects to then return to the U.S. for more festival dates. The Agency is booking the tour; Tom Vitorino is managing the band.

"The (new) music is different from the Doors, but decidedly Doors-like," Manzarek said. "We're going in various directions musically."
