The event, "The World of Nick Adams," was a benefit for the Painted Turtle Camp, the newest member of the Assn. of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps for seriously ill kids.
The complete talent list: Annette Bening, Matt Damon, Brian Dennehy, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn, Kevin Kline, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, Chris O'Donnell, Edward James Olmos, Julia Roberts, Gary Sinise, Mena Suvari, Bruce Willis, Joanne Woodward -- and a small, late appearance by Warren Beatty.
(An all-star fund-raiser was also performed last November at New York's Avery Fisher Hall with many of this same group of thesps.)
At the Kodak perf, Aaron Copland's music was played by 32 members of the L.A. Philharmonic conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya.
Gordon Davidson directed, pulling together his entire CTG "SWAT Team" to get the cast onstage with a two-day rehearsal.
Lou Adler, who produced with Kevin Duncan, said the L.A. production was "even better than New York" But, Hotchner added, "It can never again be repeated."
Nicholson as Hemingway was "the glue that held the show together," Adler said. He hadn't been on a stage since 1958 -- but no one was ever more comfortable.
As Adler noted, "Jack Nicholson raises the bar when he's onstage."
Adler and wife Page are spearheading the Painted Turtle project.
The Paul Newman-A.E. Hotchner team continues with the Newman's Own products, profits of which go to charities. Hotchner said $9 million was donated just two weeks ago.
