Inside Move: More Wright accusations
TV writer Cherry complains of money not received
|
Wright, who is scheduled to appear in Burbank Superior Court today for the scheduling of a preliminary hearing, was arrested Sept. 21 on charges of grand theft and fraud, stemming from allegedly embezzling more than $160,000 off a former client, screenwriter Robert Kuhn ("Mickey Blue Eyes"). She was released Sept. 23 on her own recognizance (Daily Variety, Sept. 24).
However, the amended complaint that will be read in court today now includes a new alleged victim, TV writer Marc Cherry.
Cherry's credits include writing and producing "The Golden Girls" as well as CBS' Paramount Network Television-produced "Kiss Me Guido."
In 2001, he made a $100,000 pilot script deal with PNT that was later tabled. The complaint alleges that, unbeknownst to Cherry, Wright went to Par and said her client wanted to settle out of the deal and walk away rather than pick it up at a later date.
The studio agreed and on Nov. 30 cut a check for $25,000, made out to Marc Cherry, c/o the Wright Concept, that was supposed to be deposited into the agency's trust account before she wrote a check to Cherry. However, according to the complaint, the check for Cherry was never issued.
When contacted, Wright told Daily Variety, "I have no comment."
Shortly after her release from jail, Wright sent an email addressed to "Clients and Friends" with a copy of the Sept. 23 Daily Variety article. In the missive, she wrote, "I believe this article's appearance (and my arrest, as well) is a further intensity of Mr. Kuhn's spitefulness toward me that stems from the ongoing civil lawsuit -- I fully expect to prevail in this ongoing battle."
