Focus fetes Hyman

U arm taps ex-Miramax physical prod'n chief

Kevin Hyman, former head of physical production at Miramax, has been named exec VP at Universal Pictures' specialty film unit, Focus Features.

Hyman, to be based in New York, will run physical production on Focus' inhouse film productions and will also oversee post-production on those films and other Focus acquisitions.

At Miramax for seven years, first as senior VP, then as exec VP of physical production, Hyman oversaw 100 films, including the "Scream" trilogy, "Good Will Hunting" and "Shakespeare in Love." He also supervised work on the mini-major's TV projects.

Hyman, who ankled Miramax over the summer, is one of several high-level Miramax execs to exit the company this year. Miramax L.A. head Mark Gill ankled last week to form a production venture. And in September, Tim Clawson took over as head of physical production at the mini-major.

At Focus, Hyman will report to Focus prexy of production Glenn Williamson while also working closely with Focus co-prexies David Linde and James Schamus.

Multi-tasking

"In establishing Focus as a filmmaker-driven company, we've substantially increased our inhouse productions for fall and winter," Linde and Schamus said. "In establishing himself as someone who has expertly and successfully multi-tasked on several dozen movies a year, Kevin is a perfect fit with our exceptional filmmakers."

In months to come, Focus will ramp up its production slate with an untitled film about Sylvia Plath starring Gwyneth Paltrow; Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's pic, "21 Grams"; Mira Nair's adaptation of the Victorian classic "Vanity Fair"; and "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind," a pic Michel Gondry will direct from a script by Charlie Kaufman.

"Kevin is one of the smartest executives and troubleshooters in the business," Williamson said. "He has an excellent reputation in the worldwide film community, and he has attained unmatched expertise in overseeing movies of all different shapes and sizes."
