B'way previews delayed
Skips on sked a rite of passage for new musicals
|
Baz Luhrmann's production of "La Boheme" will begin previews Nov. 29, three days later than originally announced.
Opening night at the Broadway Theater remains Dec. 8.
"Given the challenges of three principal casts performing in rotation, we have learned in San Francisco that our performers deserve additional stage time and technical rehearsals prior to their first performances," Luhrmann said in a statement. "The slight delay in our preview schedule will allow us to do our work." The Puccini opera now performs at the Curran Theater in San Francisco.
Skipping a few previews is a rite of passage for most nascent Broadway musicals.
"Dance of the Vampires" missed its first two previews this week due to technical complications. First perf kicks off tonight. Opening night remains Nov. 21.
And last month, "Amour" began previews as originally skedded, on Sept. 21, but immediately ran into set problems that caused a several-minute delay during that first perf. The set went back into the shop for changes, causing two previews to be canceled the following week. Preem is Sunday.
For the record, not every tuner is delay-prone. This season, "Hairspray," "Flower Drum Song" and "Movin' Out" began their preview sked as originally announced.
'Chicago' moves uptown
The long-running revival of "Chicago" will transfer in January from its current home at the Shubert Theater on West 44th Sreet to the Ambassador Theater on West 49th Street. Last perf at the Shubert is Jan. 26, first at the Ambassador is Jan. 29.
The revival of "Gypsy" starring Bernadette Peters goes into the Shubert in spring.
