TNT tees up British Open

Cabler has rights to 4 annual golf packages

TNT outbid ESPN for exclusive cable TV rights to the British Open golf championship in a seven-year deal worth about $30 million.

The contract will kick off in 2003 with 28 hours of British Open coverage July 17-20. ABC has renewed the broadcast-exclusive part of the deal, giving the network extensive coverage all day Saturday and Sunday.

"We're looking for tentpole sports events to bolster TNT's schedule," said Mark Lazarus, president of Turner Sports.

With the British Open, TNT has exclusive cable rights to four annual golf packages. The three others are the PGA Championship, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and the 2003 Presidents Cup.

Other TNT tentpole events, Lazarus said, are wide coverage of NASCAR racing events during the second half of the year and an exclusive National Basketball Assn. primetime game of the week every Thursday during the regular season.

The British Open deal includes video-on-demand rights to the golf matches, as well as other interactive-TV applications and online radio coverage.
