Williams scores with NL femme football pic

'Sugar' writer tackles Chick Flicks

New Line Cinema has inked a deal with "Menace II Society" scribe Tyger Williams for his take on the National Women's Football League.

Produced by Sarah Risher via her Chick Flicks banner, pic will focus on several women who play for the love of the game and to escape the harsh working conditions of their small-town life, but who become "the touchstone of the community" as their fame spreads.

The NWFL was formed in August 2000 by sports/entertainment entrepreneur Catherine Masters. The league started with two teams, the Nashville Dream and the Alabama Renegades, playing a preseason showcase of six games. It since has grown to more than 20 teams and a season that runs from February to June.

Williams said the characters are loosely based on the league's players, but will be fictionalized. "When you see them play, you realize pretty quickly that it's no joke," Williams said, adding, "There are bruises on these housewives -- the whole nine."

Williams wrote the script for "Foxy Brown" for MGM and recently rewrote "Defence" at Disney.

Project is being overseen by New Line exec veepee of production Stokely Chaffin.

Williams was repped in the deal by UTA and by his managers at Catch 23 Entertainment.
