CEO created Oz Tony's, Helpmann Awards

SYDNEY -- Australian Entertainment Industry Assn. CEO Jan Stoneham announced Tuesday she will leave to enjoy well-earned free time as soon as a replacement has been found.

Stoneham, who has been with the body for nine years, created the so-called Oz Tony's, the Helpmann Awards, which were presented for the second time in May. She's also behind a six-year crusade to publish box office results for the performing arts.

Commercial tuner producers, concert promoters and commercial legit producers do not disclose B.O. State opera, ballet and theater companies, and arts festivals publish balance sheets in their annual reports but a month-by-month B.O. tally has not been made public.

However ticketing companies have agreed to publish genre-based B.O. from January. Figures will indicate, for example, how much annual arts fests leech from the economy and track monthly ticket sales to tuners.

It's the first step towards introducing the Broadway system that details show-by-show attendance but Stoneham's not holding her breath. "I would be dreaming to hope for that in anything under ten years," she said.
