'Canada' sweeps Geminis
'Hour' nabs five noms
The skein, known as "The Industry" in the U.S., picked up all five nominations in the comedy/variety writing category for Mark Farrell, Alex Galatis, Ed Riche (twice) and Rick Mercer (who also stars in the series,), four noms for direction (John Greyson, Stephen Reynolds and two for Henry Sarwer-Foner), three for the ensemble performance category, as well as a nomination for comedy.
"This Hour has 22 Minutes," also produced by Salter Street, picked up five nods, including comedy, direction, ensemble performance, design and make-up.
The coroner drama "Da Vinci's Inquest" received ten nominations including dramatic series, direction, writing and four performance noms.
Nine nominations went to Alliance Atlantis' "Cold Squad" including dramatic series and five for performance, and eight for Alliance Atlantis' "The Associates," a series about young lawyers killed after its second season.
Among other multiple mentions in an exhaustive list of nominees that runs to 76 pages are: "Blue Murder"; "Trudeau," about Canada's flamboyant former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau; and Hell's Angels series "The Last Chapter."
Pubcaster the CBC dominated the news nominations, with private webs CTV and Global distant also-rans right down the line.
Presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the Gemini Awards will be doles out over three nights starting Nov. 2 in Toronto.
