Lumieres get new spark
Organizers looking for Gallic pubcaster
The awards ceremony had dwindled to a nonevent due to a lack of cash and seemed doomed when Unifrance ended its partnership in 2000. But the Centre National de la Cinematographie and Paris City Hall have coughed up around $20,000 -- roughly equivalent to a debt still owed to Unifrance.
Organizers also are negotiating with a Gallic pubcaster for the TV rights to the next ceremony.
"We're very happy that we've been given this chance to get up and running again -- for at least another year," director Octavi Marti told Daily Variety.
Some 200 foreign correspondents belong to the Lumieres association, which honors Gallic films. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Amelie" took home the pic honor earlier this year.
