Mary McGuckian ("Best," "This Is the Sea") will helm the ensemble drama set in early 18th-century Peru; pic is skedded to begin shooting Jan. 7 in Spain. The cast of American and European actors is expected to be announced in two weeks.
Set in the 1740s, pic tells the stories of five people who plunge to their deaths when the San Luis Rey bridge collapsed.
The U.K.-Spanish co-production will draw equity from the U.K. plus British tax incentive funds arranged by Scion Film Financing.
International sales will be handled by John Flynn at Hollywood Classics with Kathy Morgan Intl. Beachwood Capital has arranged the funding on behalf of Hollywood Classics.
A U.S. domestic deal is being negotiated jointly by Pembridge (run by Mary McGuckian, brother Garrett McGuckian and Elvira Bolz) and Craig Darian and Howard Kazandjian's Tricor Entertainment.
Pembridge has secured a guarantee against domestic, Garrett McGuckian told Daily Variety Tuesday at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Pembridge and Tricor are entertaining a number of offers for U.S. distribution to release the guarantee, he added.
Headed by Denise O'Dell and Mark Albela, Kanzaman co-produced "Sexy Beast" and "The Reckoning" and is co-producing Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Dreamers."
