Latham laffs up comedy crown skein

Comedians to compete with one another in 'Kings'

"Original Kings of Comedy" producer Walter Latham wants to televise his search to crown a new comedic royal family.

Latham has struck a seven-figure deal with Miller Lite to sponsor "The Next Kings and Queens of Comedy," a 13-episode reality skein in development.

Latham would exec produce the project, which would kick off with a five-city casting call.

Ten comedians would then face off in standup, improv, impersonations and other competitions until two are left standing. The finalists would then compete for the grand prize, which includes a development deal, cash and a year contract as a Miller Lite representative.

William Morris, which reps Latham, along with Tom Fineman, is packaging the project and coordinated with Ogilvy & Mather to bring Miller Lite onboard.

Kimiko Fox, who serves as Latham's production prexy, will co-exec produce "Next Kings and Queens of Comedy." Project has not yet landed at an outlet.

Latham also has a primetime sketch comedy series, also called "Kings of Comedy," in development.

Latham's original two-year Kings of Comedy tour, starring Steve Harvey, Bernie Mac, D.L. Hughley and Cedric the Entertainer, grossed $39 million. An MTV Films pic based on the tour grossed more than $38 million.

Latham also promoted comedy tours featuring Bill Bellamy and Chris Tucker, and promoted Chris Rock's Emmy-winning HBO special "Bring the Pain."

The producer also showcased a Queens of Comedy tour in 2000, featuring Mo'Nique, Adele Givens and others.
