Lions Gate reups 'Secretary'
Worldwide rights nabbed for Spader, Gyllenhaal pic
Lions Gate will continue to sell all remaining territories on pic, which it acquired from U.K.-based Alibi Films, as well as handling all the servicing and delivery requirements for the pic on behalf of its international distributors.
Pic, based on a short story by Mary Gaitskill, follows the life of an unstable young woman (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who gets a job working for the mysterious Mr. Grey (James Spader). Their seemingly normal working relationship develops into an intense and unconventional love affair.
"We found 'Secretary' to be one of the most powerful films we had seen in a long time with great potential for box office success both at home and abroad," said Nick Meyer, co-prexy of Lions Gate Films Intl. with Sergei Yershov. "We are delighted to now be handling the film not only in the U.S. but also internationally; we believe this is a love story that will appeal to viewers the world over."
