Seven scribes are shortlisted for this year's award, which will be announced at the close of the Sept. 26-Oct. 11 fest.
Contenders are Nicholas Racz for "The Burial Society"; Keith Behrman, "Flower and Garnet"; Dennis Foon, "Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity"; Jeffery Erbach, "The Nature of Nicholas"; Guy Bennett, "Punch"; Terrance Odette, "Saint Monica"; and Ori Kowarsky, "Various Positions."
Citytv Vancouver, the newest outlet in Toronto-based Chum Television's eight-station network, is funding the award. Chum also funds a $9,750 award for the best Canadian first feature film at the Toronto Film fest.
"The screenwriter's award will be a major help in the development of indigenous talent in western Canada," said Diane Burgess, programmer of the juried Canadian Images section of the VIFF. Fest will unspool a record 44 films from the region this year.
The Canadian Images panelists are Anne Pelouas, Montreal correspondent for Le Monde and Agence France Presse; John Poser, producer of Genie and VIFF award-winner " Kissed"; and Katherine Monk, film critic for the Vancouver Sun.
