Lescure found himself out of work in April when Jean-Marie Messier, then-chairman/CEO of Canal parent Vivendi Universal, ousted him in a much-publicized political brouhaha before himself meeting the same fate last week.
Work for Canal Plus pix
One of the French cinema's most beloved figureheads, Lescure was involved in various films backed by Canal Plus, including a number of American indie pics, making him a fave on both sides of the Atlantic.
He was the driving force behind the existing partnership between Canal Plus and the Deauville fest, making him a natural to head the jury.
The festival, whose guests will include Jennifer Lopez, Nicolas Cage, Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford, will announce the rest of the jury Aug. 15. The fest runs from Aug. 30-Sept. 8.
