HONG KONG -- Stephen Chow will make a sequel to "Shaolin Soccer," the blockbuster martial arts comedy in which he starred and directed.
Speaking at the Filmart confab here on Thursday, Chow said the first movie's success lies partly in the unique idea of combining Shaolin monks with soccer. "There was something new that the audience had never seen," he said, of Hong Kong's biggest box office hit. "In the sequel, we will have to make it better. It will be a challenge."
Miramax Films is distributing "Shaolin Soccer" in the U.S. and owns distribution rights to the sequel.
Universe Entertainment is in a legal dispute with co-producer Star Overseas involving the movie's revenues and is not expected to be involved in the sequel.
