'Bend It' gets gong

Sydney Film Festival auds voted most popular film honors to Gurinder Chadha's "Bend It Like Beckham," which also collected the $15,000 Prix UIP award for a contempo Euro pic.

Second fave was the film version of Moises Kaufman's hit play "The Laramie Project." Ken Loach's "The Navigators" was third.

Fest, which opened June 7 with the world preem of NewVision Films' courtroom drama "Black and White," starring Kerry Fox and Robert Carlyle, wrapped Friday with Dendy Films' sexually charged "Y tu mama tambien."
