Chung not a factor for O'Reilly

Newsmag falls behind Fox News, MSNBC in key demo

Connie Chung's CNN debut easily improved the network's average, but her 8 o'clocker isn't a factor for Bill O'Reilly just yet.

Her cable bow topped the newsie's year-to-date average by 24%. "Connie Chung Tonight" also took in the net's highest rating -- 0.87 in households -- and with more than 850,000 total viewers, it became the most-watched regularly scheduled CNN skein in the timeslot this year.

But the newsmag still didn't get half as many viewers as Fox News' gabber magnet "The O'Reilly Factor," which Monday drew a 2.0 rating and 1.6 million viewers. In the key 25-54 demo, "Chung's" 217,000 viewers trailed behind Fox News and MSNBC.

While Chung is receiving plenty of marketing support from her net, a source said she also got a high-five from former ABC News colleague Barbara Walters, who invited her onto "The View" to discuss the debut. In particular, Walters supposedly wanted Chung to address an unflattering review that ran in Tuesday's edition of the New York Post that some considered sexist.

Chung apparently turned down the offer. ABC publicists said they didn't know anything about the matter.
