MIAMI -- Antonio "Tony" Oquendo, longtime Univision exec and senior VP-operations manager of its new TeleFutura network, died of a heart attack in his Miami home June 6. He was 54.
Santiago, Cuba, native immigrated to Miami with his family in 1960, graduated from Florida State U. with a degree in communications and took up his first TV position for Channel 51 in 1974 as chief of operations. In 1980, he joined network affiliate WLTV-Univision 23 and rose to general manager in charge of operations for the network.
Last November, he helped launch TeleFutura, featuring dubbed Hollywood movies, sports, telenovelas
and variety shows. He also played a key role in modernizing Univision's operations center in Miami.
June 21 would have marked his 22nd year with the company.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Rodriguez, host of the weekly newsmagazine "Aqui y Ahora" (Here and Now) on Univision, and two sons.
