Hines had previously hosted the telecast in 1994 when he shared the stage with Glenn Close and Nathan Lane. The 2002 event will mark Peters' first gig as host.
Both performers have their respective history with the award. Peters won Tonys for "Song and Dance" in 1986 and "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1999. Hines nabbed one when he headlined "Jelly's Last Jam" in 1992.
Peters is expected back on Broadway next season in a revival of "Gypsy."
The 2002 Tony Awards will be broadcast from Radio City Music Hall on CBS.
The telecast may lack some of the high-profile glitz of last year's event when Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick hosted and their musical, "The Producers," went on to win a record-setting 12 awards.
This year's show promises to be more suspense-filled as several categories, including best play and musical, appear to be toss-ups.
