It may seem a meteoric rise for Williams, who joined the company in January as director of marketing and strategy. But Hoyts CEO Paul Johnson made it clear he always intended to promote Williams, who was recruited by Hoyts after he left Greater Union, where he was general manager of group marketing, and before that general manager of its Queensland subsid Birch Carroll & Coyle.
In his newly created role, Williams will be responsible for the marketing and operations of Hoyts' 364 screens. Expanding Williams' ambit also gives Johnson more support as he focuses on developing the recently launched Hoyts Distribution and its relationship with Stewart Till's Signpost Films, and on Hoyts' growing involvement in Australian films in league with sister firm Nine Films & Television.
"Hoyts is the leading name in Australian cinema and we intend to further grow the business through innovation and a strong focus on enhancing the Hoyts experience for our customers," Williams said. "As the market is fairly mature, the challenge is to maintain healthy growth without opening new screens. It's a case of how to make better use of the screens we've got."
