'Dickens' bites dust after Tony noms

Snubbed by kudos, one-person play to shutter May 12

"The Mystery of Charles Dickens" is the first casualty of the Tony Award nominations.

Peter Ackroyd's one-person play starring Simon Callow went away empty-handed from Monday's nomination announcements at Sardi's restaurant. "The Graduate" and "QED" are the other new productions currently playing that got snubbed. However, those two shows are performing at more than 90% capacity, with Alan Alda starrer "QED" scheduled to close June 10 after a long two-perf-a-week run at Lincoln Center.

"Charles Dickens" shutters May 12 after seven previews and 20 performances at the Belasco Theater.

Announcement of the Tony nominations generally bring a spate of closings. This season may see fewer May exits than usual, since such B.O.-challenged shows as "The Elephant Man," "Fortune's Fool" and "The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" received high-profile noms.

The limited run "Elaine Stritch at Liberty," which did a hefty $283,875 gross last week, will close May 26 as originally scheduled.

The Tony Awards will be presented June 2.
