Cheung in Celestial orbit

Exec tapped VP of distribution

HONG KONG -- Tyro TV and film player Celestial Pictures appointed another key executive Wednesday.

Gordon Cheung, former Centro Pictures Entertainment exec VP, has been tapped exec VP of distribution at Celestial, just in time for the Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off May 15.

He will be responsible for distribution and sales of the 760-strong Shaw Brothers library for homevideo and television and also will work with the production unit.

Tony Watts, a seasoned television exec who was head of movies at Star TV, recently joined Celestial as head of network operations, responsible for the channel it intends to bow this year.

Actor, director and producer Wong Jing heads production.

More new hires are expected this year as the young company expands. It is still scouting for staffers for its Beijing and Shanghai offices. Company has been ramping up since CEO William Pfeiffer joined last year and kicked it into high gear.
