Bernal revs motor for Salles' Che 'Diaries'

'Mama' thesp takes to two-wheels in upcoming biopic

Gael Garcia Bernal, star of "Amores Perros" and "Y tu mama tambien," will portray Che Guevara in "The Motorcycle Diaries."

Pic will be directed by Walter Salles and backed by U.K.-based mini-studio FilmFour and Germany's Senator Films. Robert Redford's Southfork Pictures produces the picture.

"Motorcycle" recounts Guevara's journey as a young medical student traversing South America in the early 1950s.

Playwright Jose Rivera adapted the screenplay from the journals of Guevara and his compatriot, Alberto Granado. Pic will be filmed in Spanish and shot on location in Argentina, Peru and Chile later this year.

Bernal is shooting "dot the i" for Summit Entertainment.
