'Rings' is king of MTV movie nods

Fantasy pic leads pack with 6 noms

Circling 6 nominations, New Line's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings" will head into MTV's upcoming 2002 Movie Awards with the most kudos for any film.

"Lord of the Rings" is in the hunt for honors in the best pic, best male perf (Elijah Wood), best villain (Christopher Lee) and best action sequence categories, among others.

Other pics nabbing multiple noms include Universal's "The Fast & and the Furious (5), New Line's "Rush Hour 2" (5), Fox's "Moulin Rouge" (4) and DreamWorks' "Shrek" (4).

Filling out the big award contenders are "Black Hawk Down" (Sony), "The Fast and the Furious," "Legally Blonde" (MGM) and "Shrek" for best film.

Battling Wood for best male thesp will be Russell Crowe from "A Beautiful Mind" (Universal); Vin Diesel, "The Fast and the Furious"; Josh Hartnett, "Pearl Harbor" (Touchstone/Disney); and Will Smith, "Ali" (Sony).

Femme thesp nominees are Kate Beckinsale for "Pearl Harbor"; Halle Berry, "Monsters Ball" (Lion's Gate); Angelina Jolie, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" (Paramount), Nicole Kidman, "Moulin Rouge"; and Reese Witherspoon, "Legally Blonde."

The "MTV 2002 Movie Awards," tapes June 1 from the Shrine Auditorium for air on the cabler June 6 at 9 p.m.
