DVD adds computer bonus

Video business plays the 'Game'

Apparently 10 hours of extra material isn't enough for even casual fans of movies that may not be blockbusters or cult favorites.

With the April 9 release of "Spy Game," starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, Universal Studios Home Video is adding two components to the DVD collector's edition that bring the studio in line with others: hours of additional material accessible online when the DVD is played in the DVD-ROM drive of a computer, and a feature allowing access to featurettes and behind-the-scenes material related to specific scenes as the movie is playing.

In addition to the 10 hours of deleted scenes, an alternate ending, an audio commentary by director Tony Scott and producers, and other material, the online element that links to a "Total Axess" Web site offers never-before-seen video and photos, behind-the-scenes footage, trivia contests, downloadable screen savers, Scott's screenplay and notes, and streaming videos of the L.A. world premiere and additional comments by Redford, Pitt and Scott.

"We often have more bonus material than we can fit on a DVD, so rather than simply omitting it because of space constraints, we can now offer it to fans who crave even more behind-the-scenes material," said Ken Graffeo, USHV senior VP, marketing.
