PARIS -- French helmer Alain Resnais will be honored at the Cannes Film Festival May 18 and a new print of his 1968 film, "Je t'aime, je t'aime," will be shown 24 years after its Croisette premiere was scrapped.
The fest, held during one of the country's most turbulent political periods, was shut down after two days. Young New Wave helmers, such as Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, hung onto the velvet curtains in front of the screen to prevent them from opening, in support of rioting Gallic students and workers.
New Wave pioneer
Resnais's "Hiroshima mon amour" awed viewers at the 1959 Cannes fest. The film, scripted by Marguerite Duras, was one of the flagship pics of the New Wave and copped an Academy Award nom for original screenplay in 1961.
When Resnais returned to Cannes in 1980, he nabbed the special jury prize for his Gerard Depardieu starrer "Mon oncle d'amerique."
