GOING ASHORE WITH "20,000 LEAGUES Under the Sea": Richard Crenna will star in Robert Halmi's Hallmark CBS vidpic version of the Jules Verne classic as marine biologist Professor Arronax. But, all the scenes will be shot on a Pinewood stage, with Mickey Anderson directing. Crenna was happy to get the news of the location: He says he was to have shot it in Malta, where they have an enormous tank. Ironically, Crenna was in Malta last year filming "Lost City of Atlantis." Crenna became available for the Halmi epic when his pilot,"Texas Graces," didn't get a CBSlot this fall ... Bud Grant's feature "Last Letter to Sarajevo" is being readied at Par, where the studio told him they'd like Tom Cruise or John Travolta for the lead. (Who wouldn't want either one for anything?) It's the true story of American newsman Eric Adam, who fell in love with Bosnian Olympic runner Mirsada Buric after watching her tell her plight on TV from the Barcelona Olympics. A European femme co-star would be sought -- good for overseas box office appeal, natch. Grant has a bigscreen WB deal, but for first look only. And it includes a 1997 version of the '67 "Up the Down Staircase." Janet Jones is scripting the updated version. Also at WB is Grant's planned Little Richard biopic, with Felix Alcala to direct. And Grant's also readying the biopic of ex-Mafioso warlord Sonny Gibson. Grant -- an alumnus of CBS, where he headed the net's feature division after running their gameshows, including "The Price Is Right," "Gambit" and "The Joker's Wild"-- is developing an Internet gameshow with Herman Rush and Ray Katz's banner ... Bruce Boxleitner's syndie'd "Babylon 5" has been renewed for 22 segs -- and wife Melissa Gilbert will guest in two of 'em. She's in Calgary in the "Harvest of Lies" vidpic with Dennis Weaver; he's also grand marshal of the Stampede while there TV'ing.
THE AUDIO PUBLISHERS' first Audie Awards went to Robin Williams' "Jumanji" for children's title, Jonathon Kozol's "Amazing Grace" beat out the Pope's audio book "Crossing the Threshold," and Charles Kuralt's "America" won for best non-fiction (abridged) ... Frances Fisher bows in Caryl Churchill's play, "Three More Sleepless Nights," Saturday at the McCadden. This is Fisher's return to stage after eight years ... Katharine Kramer and Anita O'Day are at the Viper Room June 20; Kramer's readying the O'Day bio for stage and screen ... And Victor (sports) Awards presenters, June 29 on Prime Sports Net (benefiting the City of Hope Medical Center and Beckman Research) include Paul Anka, James Belushi, Shari Belafonte, Daniel Benzali, Wayne Newton, William Devane, Dennis Franz, Vanna White, Florence Henderson, Norm Crosby and Fred Williamson, to name a few ... The Beastly Ball at the L.A. Zoo, which was the late Gloria (Mrs. Jimmy) Stewart's pet charity, this year raised over $300,000. Grant Tinker presented Betty White with the award for dedicating her life to the protection and preservation of all animals. Who could be more deserving?
