Whoopi, Miss Piggy trade cameos

GOOD MORNING: As if Whoopi Goldberg isn't busy enough this weekend readying, among other things, to introduce "Babe" on the Oscars, she taped a guestint with Miss Piggy Thursday for the "Muppets Tonight!" series, duetting on "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend." Whoopi follows a former Oscar host, Billy Crystal, who guests tonight with the Muppets on ABC. Can ex-Oscar hosts David Letterman and Johnny Carson also be upcoming with Miss Piggy? On the Oscars, Whoopi "satellites" a talk with "Babe" on the Hoggett farm in Australia -- only to have Miss Piggy hog into the seg ... Frank Langella returned to L.A. with Goldberg -- and to add a scene for the film "Eddie." In the film (in which they met), he stars as a basketball team owner, she as his chauffeur, whose basketball know-how jumps her into the coaching job. Whoopi became a grandmother for the second time, thanks to daughter Alex Martin and her husband Bernard Dean, who welcomed daughter Jerzey Feb. 7. They also have a daughter Amariah, 6 ... Talking earlier of diamonds, Whoopi will be jeweled by Harry Winston at the Oscars -- the gems range from $150,000 to $200,000. Others wearing Winston loaners include Emma Thompson, Joan Allen and Mira Sorvino. No, Sharon Stone is not one of the winsome Winston wearers this year, following last year's lend-lose deal ... There'll also be high fashion in this year's Oscar show, with an opening number boasting the costume nominees outdoing the shows in Milan and Paris ... Hal Kanter, who has written 26 Oscar shows, will be sitting out front this year, viewing as an Acad board member. But he'll probably be taking notes: He's winding his autobiog, "So Far, So Funny" (McFarland), which will no doubt include momentous Oscar moments, plus his three Emmy wins and experiences on his 25 screenplays ... Former Oscar show producer Allan Carr, minus 30 pounds after a stay at the Canyon Ranch, will this year watch the Oscars at Elton John's party at Maple Drive.

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD (?) THING: The fire marshal was called because of the overcrowd at the premiere-post party for "Diabolique." When many preview ticket holders couldn't get into the Cineplex Century City main theater, apologetic producer Marvin Worth said prints had to be obtained for two adjoining screens. The 1,000-plus mob marched down the street afterward to the Century City club for an equally "Diabolique" mob scene. Protected in an upstairs room, we were able to chat with the gorgeous Isabelle Adjani, who was to have arrived together with Sharon Stone at the preem -- but their limos got bolluxed and each glamorous lady arrived singly. Adjani's in love with L.A. living, but returns to her native Paris for "The Doubles" with dual-roled John Travolta. She's already met with director Roman Polanski. "Diabolique's" terrif Chazz Palminteri said he had ordered Adjani and Stone to literally "drown me" in the terror-filled murder scenes and he demonstrated to me a fail-safe cue if their attempts were too effective -- as they were once. He looks forward to his next role in "Dante and the Debutante," in which he also directs his screenplay for New Line ... Director Jeremiah Chechik was overjoyed by the preem-pleased crowd, but annoyed by crix who made comparisons to the original; he and Worth said they wanted to take a different tack. Sharon Stone saw the film for the first time last Thursday and was happy about its result, Worth said. But she skipped the preem party: She has enough parties coming up this weekend -- plus Monday, when she is escorted to the Oscars by her dad, Joe Stone ... Irate fans are not only writing letters, but campaigning over the Internet after hearing David Carradine's "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues" was canceled. Over 4,000 letters plus an ad by the fans have been received by WB and affiliates to date. Meanwhile, David is moving back to L.A. from Toronto ... Edie (Mrs. Lew) Wasserman, who suffered a "mild heart attack," is expected to be home from Cedars-Sinai this weekend.

FOLLOWING 66 YEARS AS A HOLLYWOOD resale store, the Cinema Glamour Shop will have a celeb reopening Sunday. It is run by the Screen Smart Set, the auxiliary of the Motion Picture & TV Fund, which operates with volunteers. Oscar-winning costumes by Edith Head will be on display. The shop opens Monday ... Morton Downey Jr., who has served on the National Smokers' Alliance board of advisers for years, has just resigned from the lobbying org. He wrote 'em, "I am a person who is tragically addicted to smoking cigarettes and because of my public persona, am one of the most visible smokers in the country. Though I still defend the rights of people to smoke, I am no longer confident that the information imparted by the tobacco manufacturers and the NSA reflect the truth." Mort's guesting in a "Diagnosis Murder" plus appearing in three of his own pilots ... BAFTA holds a nominees' tea at Shutters on the Beach, Saturday -- not only for Brits, but all nations ... PMK press agent Jennifer Allen and husband sports-press agent Jeff Freedman welcomed son Jack Allen F. March 18 at Cedars-Sinai.
