SanFran subdued, with eye on L.A.

GOOD MORNING AFTER: We left the smoky, smog-filled, gray-brown skies of L.A. for a breather in -- SanFran. In 57 minutes we were in the beautiful, blue-hued skies of the city by the bay. There was little/no traffic driving past the temporarily shuttered Candlestick Park and in a few minutes we drove up to the Prescott Hotel, home of Wolfgang Puck's Postrio restaurant, just two blocks from Union Square. There had been some damage nearby -- stores and buildings boarded up with plywood. But there was no sign of fire or destruction like we had left in L.A. SanFran was quiet over the weekend. The Friday night curfew was lifted Saturday but the city remained subdued -- and everyone was talking about L.A. ... At the jewel-box Prescott Hotel, where service is their byword, people wondered whether all of California's summer business would be affected by the Southern California catastrophe. ... Business at Postrio -- where reservations are usually needed a month in advance -- was off a bit Friday and back to normal Saturday. Anne and David Gingrass, Postrio's talented chefs, alumni of Spago, had planned to bring their northern chef d'oeuvres to L.A.'s Eureka tonight for a special feast, but, because of conditions here, they've delayed the gourmet gala to May 19 The Gingrasses, along with Wolfgang Puck, have presented SanFran with a restaurant whose atmosphere and menu reflect showmanship. Remarkably, the prices are reasonable. But Anne and David told us they'd returned last month from a trek through France and its noted eateries -- and meals ran to $500 for the two of them -- without expensive wines. You can get by easily at Postrio for $70. ... We caught "Beach Blanket Babylon, " Steve Silver's hysterical revue, now in its 19th year at the Club Fugazy, and reunion'd with the "Snow White" character who set off all the brouhaha between Disney and the Academy at the Allan Carr-produced 6st Oscars in '89. You recall, we "interviewed" Snow White (Eileen Bowman) as she arrived at the Shrine as an "Oscar guest" and followed the "yellow brick road" down to the stage and the opening number with Rob Lowe. Well, 'Snow," who made her first parodied appearance in "Beach Blanket" in 1978, is still putting them in the aisles in SanFran. Producer Silver says he's never had a word of complaint from anyone. How could they -- it's good, clean fun. Linda Bulgo, the current "Snow White," is a big talent -- segues from playing "Snow" to -- Madonna. And the rest of the cast, Clay Adkins as Elvis, Dana Adkins as Cher, Val Diamond as Ms. San Fran, Arthur Hervey as Clarence Thomas, Stacie James as Ivana Trump (!), Bob Jesser as Rocky, Renee Lubin as Anita Hill, Kenny Mazlow as King Louie and Richard Pardini as Sonny Bono, are as clever as thesps come. But it's Silver's genius that keeps this show SRO.

A STILL-SHOCKED SHELLEY MORRISON (Mrs. Walter Dominguez) told us yesterday that she and her family were still barricaded in their house that backs up to the fire-destroyed La Cienega Square -- where she's lived 46 years. The thesp (who just did "Murder, She Wrote" and "Sisters") credits friends-neighbors of all colors -- for saving her house by bucket brigades, connected garden hoses, etc. The house is in a historical zone of L.A. They had their valuables, papers, etc., packed in the car ready to depart at any second. ... The Improv is removing cover charges at the Hollywood and Santa Monica boites for all who bring two cans of food with 'em. ... Diane Ladd and Valerie Harper mobilized a group that made hundreds of sandwiches in an assembly line that included Beau and Lloyd Bridges, Mimi Rogers, Yaphet Kotto, Roseanna DeSoto, Apollonia, Phyllis Applegate, Joanne Carson, Lee Patterson, Carl Weathers. They also packed bags of groceries donated by Boys Markets. ... The bow of "Stardust' at the Wilshire is postponed to May 17. ... And the Joffrey's Wiltern opener's delayed to May 22. ... Linda Yellen winged here to start talks with Ray Katz on the feature version of Lanford Wilson's --"Burn This"! ... A wrongful-death case was filed yesterday (by attorney Paul Sigelman) on behalf of the family of Alice Fiondella, struck down and killed in mid-crosswalk a year ago. The defendants included Joel Shukovsky, Diane English, Murphy Brown Prods., WB-TV, CBS, Range Rover, etc. A remembrance will be held tomorrow for Fiondella at her son's eatery, Chez Jay's. ... Edward James Olmos' mother Eleanor Olmos, Lee Meriwether, Connie Sellecca, Michele Lee, Mary Thompson, Zelma Phelps, Carol DeLuise, Patti Van Patten, Beatrice Provenza Bass and Laurette McCook are honorees at the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) lunch/auction May 10 at the Century Plaza.

RADIATION IS COMPLETE FOR RAYMOND BURR, he happily told us yesterday from the Denver site of his "Perry Mason" filming. He underwent the treatments in the ayem before daily filming for the show that airs tonight. He started a second show yesterday, and will probably do a third "Mason" before -- an "Ironside" special for Universal-NBC. ... Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins welcomed their second son yesterday in N.Y. Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne are expecting their second baby. They have a son, Jack. Barkin's bowed out of a planned pic, "Romeo's Bleeding."
